EASTON, Pa. — With rain and thunderstorms in the forecast, the City of Easton Memorial Day Parade slated for Monday has been canceled, it was announced Friday.
The parade was scheduled to step off Monday at 10:30 a.m. from Sixth and Northampton streets, proceeding through Centre Square to the free bridge before the mayors of Easton and Phillipsburg jointly tossed a ceremonial wreath into the Delaware River.
After the parade, a ceremony also was scheduled to be held at the Riverside Park amphitheater on Larry Holmes Drive.
An indoor ceremony will now be held at American Legion Post 9, 2260 Corriere Road, Palmer Township.
Weekend forecast is dry, Monday unsettled
The weekend is expected to be warm and dry, with afternoon clouds and highs in the mid to upper 80s both Saturday and Sunday.
But it’ll be Monday — the official Memorial Day holiday — that will be messy.
“That day is not going to be for outdoor activities,” EPAWA meteorologist Bobby Martrich said earlier in the week, noting models have “been pretty consistent” with the trend to wet weather, particularly in the afternoon.
The National Weather Service said an upper level system will push a cold front through the region, with widespread convection across the region and conditions sufficient to support thunderstorms.
The Lehigh Valley could see severe weather, with increased confidence in heavy rain on Monday.
The updated forecast comes a day after a turbulent morning of storms brought significant damage to parts of the Lehigh Valley on Thursday, with estimated wind speeds of 60 to 70 mph.
The storms swept through the region around 8:30 a.m., sparking heavy downpours, snapping three limbs and quickly flooding roads.
More than 28,000 electricity customers were without power around 9 a.m. in Lehigh and Northampton counties after the storm rolled through.
Outages lingered for PPL Electric customers in some areas Friday morning, particularly in hard-hit South Whitehall Township and in parts of Allentown.
