BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Republican state Rep. Zachary Mako on Tuesday won his party's nomination for a fifth term representing the 183rd District, according to unofficial results.
Mako defeated Republican challenger Zachari Halkias, a Slatington Borough councilman.
The Associated Press called the race for Mako, an Army helicopter pilot in the Pennsylvania National Guard, at 9:54 p.m.
Mako, 35, of Walnutport, will face Democrat Joseph Lenzi in the Nov. 5 general election. Lenzi ran unopposed on the Democratic ticket in the primary election.
Halkias, 22, was making his first run at state office. He is president pro tem of Slatington Borough Council.
Mako serves on the House Appropriations, Finance, Professional Licensure and Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness committees.
Among Mako’s stated priorities is property tax reform. He favors legislation that would give residents who are at least 65 years old and earn less than $60,000 a year a $5,000 break on their school property taxes.
Such a rebate would be made possible with the Senior Citizen Additional Property Tax Rebate Fund.
The 183rd District includes Lowhill and North Whitehall townships and Slatington in Lehigh County, and Allen, East Allen and Lehigh townships, part of Moore Townships and Bath, North Catasauqua, Northampton and Walnutport in Northampton County.
