LOWER MACUNGIE TWP., Pa. — What has become a familiar sight and tradition in many communities to spotlight local veterans now is coming to Lower Macungie.
And the township is looking for its residents' help.
The township's new Hometown Heroes banner program, in its first round, will hang 25 veterans' photos along "high-traffic" locations throughout the township for two consecutive years.
Each banner will display a local veteran's photo, along with the military branch and years served.
“The banners allow us to share their service with our residents and visitors who will be able to see these tributes and be reminded of their fellow Lower Macungie citizens.”Lower Macungie Township Manager Bruce Beitel
After that, applicants have the option to collect the banner or renew it to be hung for two more years.
Banners cost $150, which will go toward the production and continuation of the program.
The township will partner with Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce for the program.
“We are excited to participate with the Chamber to memorialize and honor those Lower Macungie Residents that served, sacrificed, and may have made the ultimate sacrifice to allow us all to enjoy the freedoms that we have in this country,” Lower Macungie Township Manager Bruce Beitel said in a release.
“The banners allow us to share their service with our residents and visitors who will be able to see these tributes and be reminded of their fellow Lower Macungie citizens.”
Application process
Applications are on the Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce website, and require a physical photograph of the veteran in uniform, which will be returned once the banner is created.
The honoree must be an active duty, retired, honorably discharged or deceased U.S. Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, Navy or Coast Guard member.
Applications may be subject to a background check.
The first round of banners are first-come, first-served and will be accepted throughout May.
Lower Macungie residents can expect to see the banners hung as early as June.
