SOUTH WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. — The administrator who heads Parkland schools’ arts programs has not been in school, and parents say they are seeking answers to why.

Francis “Frank” Anonia has been Parkland’s director of visual and performing arts since 2021.

Schools Superintendent Mark Madson would not discuss the matter.

However, in an email obtained by LehighValleyNews.com, Madson told parents who inquired that there is an investigation into Anonia.

“We are aware of allegations involving Mr. Anonia that were brought to the attention of the administration," Madson said in the email.

"We immediately began an investigation which is ongoing.

“The safety of our students is our top priority. We take these allegations very seriously and will thoroughly investigate and take action if warranted.”

Madson's email did not elaborate on the nature of the allegations or a timeline for the investigation.

Parkland teachers' union President Sandra Gackenbach said Anonia is on a leave of absence, but because he is an administrator, said she does not have further details.

Efforts to reach Anonia for comment were unsuccessful. A call to Parkland High School seeking to talk to Anonia was transferred to a voicemail. There has been no response.

Anonia was Parkland High School choral director from 2007 until he was promoted to performing arts director in 2021. Before that, he was the director of choral activities for Whitehall-Coplay School District.

In his position, Anonia is “responsible for the development and implementation of all performing, visual and arts integrated curriculum, programming, and performance/presentations in all K-12 Parkland Schools,” according to a 2021 news release about his appointment.

Parent reactions

Juan Vargas’ children are involved in several of Parkland’s art programs, including Parkland’s recent student performance, "The SpongeBob Musical," which ran from April 10-14.

Vargas volunteers and donates goods for the concession stands.

“I don’t know enough given how close I thought I was to the program," he said.

He said he has not heard anything from the school administration other than when he reached out directly, and its response was vague.

“I understand they can’t give details, but I’ll be frank — the kids all know.”

“If allegations are true and I’m hearing about this from my child instead of from the administration, my power as a parent has been taken away to have meaningful conversations with my child,” he said.

Another parent in the arts program, who asked that her name not be used, said she has not heard anything from the administration.

“I wish we had at least been told that there is a suspension and an investigation,” the parent said. “I understand they can’t give details, but I’ll be frank — the kids all know.”

She said she is particularly curious about who is in charge of the department during Anonia's absence.
