PPL to drop summer electricity prices for continuing service customers

ALLENTOWN, Pa. — PPL Electric Utilities customers who don't shop for their electricity supply will see a decrease in their bill this summer, the utility says.

Customers who are on the company's default supply rate, known as the Price to Compare, will see a drop in pricing starting June 1 if they continue business with PPL, according to a release.

“Through a competitive process, we’ve been able to secure an affordable energy supply for our customers who don’t shop for energy,"
PPL President Christine Martin

The release said typical residential customers using 1000kWh per month could see more than a 9% decrease in their bill and small business customers could see upwards of a 19% cut.

That's if new rates — which would go into effect June 1 through Nov. 30 — are approved by the state Public Utility Commission.

Under those new rates, residential customers would pay 10.040 cents per kilowatt, which PPL estimates would equate to a drop of $9.77.

Small business customers would pay 9.237 cents per kilowatt, decreasing their bills $22.24.

'Affordably and responsibly'

The rate drop occurs annually, but comes after the Public Utility Commission fined PPL $1 million for billing issues.

"Good news for our customers."
PPL President Christine Martin in a release

PPL President Christine Martin in the release called the decrease "good news for our customers."

“Through a competitive process, we’ve been able to secure an affordable energy supply for our customers who don’t shop for energy," Martin said.

"On the delivery side of the bill, we continue to take steps, as we have over the past decade, to improve operating efficiency to continue delivering electricity as affordably and reliably as possible.”
